American Academy of Pediatrics Vision Assessment Policy
Vision assessment beginning in the newborn period and annually at all well-child visits has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
Instrument-based screening, if available, should be first attempted starting at 12 months at annual well-child visits, and repeated at each annual preventive medicine encounter through 5 years of age or until visual acuity can be assessed reliably.
The 2016 AAP joint policy statement emphasizes the importance of testing visual acuity as early in life as possible. Direct testing of visual acuity using age-appropriate symbols (optotypes) can often begin by 4 years of age. eyeNjoy platform delivers visual acuity tests from the age of one years.
